BRAINTREE − In the two gymnasiums, the basketball backboards are up but the playing floor isn't down.
And there are stacks of building materials in the school's combination cafeteria and auditorium, which can seat 400 people.
It may not seem that way, but the new South Middle School is nearing completion.
"I would say it is 87% complete," Doug Murray, of Hill International, the owner's project manager, told the school building committee Monday. "On schedule, on budget."
Murray led the committee on a tour of the building, the town's first all-new school in a half-century.
"We will be working on it over the summer," he said.
Located behind the current South Middle School building, the new school for grades 5 to 8 is scheduled to open for the start of the 2023-24 school year. The cost of the school is budgeted at $66.7 million, part of which is being paid by the state School Building Authority and the rest through a temporary tax increase approved by voters in 2020.
