Description

MILTON – There's an explanation for why residents heard a raucous "boom" or felt a thunderous shake Wednesday morning.

It was a small earthquake.

John Ebel, professor of geophysics at Boston College and senior research scientist at the school's Weston Observatory, said a magnitude 1.3 earthquake hit Milton at 9:37 a.m.

The event was recorded by the observatory's seismograph.

"It's just a typical small earthquake for the New England region," said Ebel, who also wrote a book on the history of earthquakes in the area. "If people feel another one, that wouldn't surprise me."

He noted this because it's happened before. Residents in Peabody felt three small earthquakes within a month in July 2021.

"Most people would have experienced it as a boom, maybe a quick shake, maybe two or three seconds of a quick shutter," he said. "For an earthquake that small, people hear it more than feel it."

Some, though, may not have heard or felt anything at all.
