Hornstra Farms updates: Babies, ice cream stand opening and maybe a new barn

Description

NORWELL − Hornstra Farms is readying for busy spring and summer seasons at its Norwell and Whitman locations and assessing the work it needs to complete for returning cows to the pastures of the Whitman farm.

While the Whitman location has served ice cream throughout the winter, the Norwell stand is scheduled to open for the season beginning in mid-April.

Work at the Norwell location continues with freshly laid mattresses, also known as stall mats, added to the barn floor to add to the cows' comfort.

"Nothing’s too good for our ladies in the barn," the farm said on Facebook.

Some of the farms' newest residents, including young calves Keke and Kapow, are on hand in the barn to greet anyone who wants to swing by to see the next generation of cows at the more than 100-year-old farm.

As things continue as they have for years at the Norwell store, the question on the minds of many loyal and new customers is what is going on with the Whitman location since the company bought the former Peaceful Meadows last summer?

According to Hornstra's Facebook page, extensive renovation work on the barn and the pasture continues at the Whitman site. The dairy store and ice cream stand in Whitman have been open for business for some time since the sale.

The dairy store will be expanded as part of Hornstra's plans for the location.

The rest of the improvements to the site will take more time and effort.

"The property, including the barns and pastures, have severely deteriorated in the past six years or so," the farm posted to its Facebook page in response to a question about the progress there. "We have a lot of work to do before the fields and barn are safe and ready for cows."

Cows had been a longtime fixture at Peaceful Meadows until a decade or so ago. Hornstra said the barn might be razed and replaced, and the company is considering seeking grant money to do so.

Another Hornstra post said it's possible that a few cows might be seen in Whitman by late summer.
