A concert by the South Shore’s Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, titled “Broadway and Beyond,” is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, on the lawn of Hingham’s Glastonbury Abbey. The open-air performance—where families are encouraged to bring a picnic basket and feast with the music—continues a 20-year-plus tradition of “Sunset at the Abbey” programs for the orchestra.

The ASO, once known as the Hingham Symphony, and still conducted by that group’s long-time maestro, Jin Kim, traditionally ushers in its regular concert season with a light-classical and pop-music Glastonbury family event. In addition to the ASO Chamber Players, next week’s Abbey musical offerings will feature soprano Chelsea Basler and mezzo soprano Caroline deLima Rubb, along with a “four-hand piano” performance. For that, ASO pianist Xiaopei Xu and Chi Wei Lo, appear as the “Psychopomp Ensemble.”

The expansive Glastonbury lawn, surrounding a performance stage, is at 16 Hull St. in Hingham. To get there, drivers heading east on Rte. 3A, Chief Justice Cushing Highway, toward Cohasset, would turn left on East St., which connects on another left with Hull St. Ample parking is available at the Abbey site.

Tickets are available on site, or in advance at https://atlanticsymphony.org/events-tickets/upcoming-events/sunset-at-the-abbey/, The cost is $30 for adults and seniors, and $10 for students, with those under 17 free. A $1.75 processing fee is charged per ticket.

The ASO’s full 2023-24 classical season opens Saturday, Oct. 21, at its symphonic venue: the Thayer Academy Hale Theater at Thayer’s Center for the Arts, 745 Washington St., Braintree. For more information about this or other Atlantic Symphony programs, call 781-331-3600.
